Our first store opened at Muscle Beach, Santa Monica, California in 1946. Our founder, Dave Barham, was a charismatic and enlightened personality who understood the value of treating people to an experience as opposed to a service. In short, he built his business around the concepts of putting people first, and giving them a show.

His approach was extremely successful. By 1990 Hot Dog on a Stick™ had become an icon in our primary venue, shopping malls, with 60 stores operating in 12 states. After Dave passed away in 1991, we became an employee owned corporation (ESOP) led by a management team he had mentored over the years. This team has successfully overseen the company's expansion to 103 stores in 17 states. In addition, they undertook an international franchising program and designed and in 1998 launched a new concept called Muscle Beach Lemonade & Hot Dogs™.

FAQ's

1. Is Hot Dog on a Stick™ franchised?
Currently HDOS Enterprises has master franchise agreements in place for Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Venezuela. Domestically, 108 locations are company owned and operated. In addition, 1 location is franchised under a single unit agreement. Although we will continue to support our current franchisees, we do not intend to pursue further agreements at this time. Instead, we are developing a program to provide ownership opportunities to current and former employees.

2. Can the Hot Dog on a Stick™ catering truck cater at my birthday party?
The catering truck is available for larger events. Contact a local store to help you cater a smaller party.

3. What is the story behind the Hot Dog on a Stick™ hat and uniform?
The Hot Dog on a Stick™ uniform, including the hat, was inspired by a whimsical mid-1960s trend when jockey caps and hot pants were in style. The employees say the hats, which are hand-made and customized to fit each new employee, make their jobs more fun and enable the company to attract enthusiastic, outgoing and good-natured employees, and draw attention to the store.

4. Can I get a Hot Dog on a Stick™ uniform?
We are sorry, but Hot Dog on a Stick™ do not sell, lend or rent our uniforms, not even for special occasions or requests. They are reserved for our very special employees.

5. Are you only located in shopping centers?
Hot Dog on a Stick™ currently has more than 105 company-owned U.S. locations plus 25 franchised units, which are primarily located in popular regional shopping malls. The company opened its first airport location in Caracas, Venezuela in 2001.

6. HDOS Enterprises is an ESOP – what does that mean?
HDOS Enterprises™ is an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which means we are a privately held company owned 100% by our employees who share equity and appreciation in the brand. We are the world’s only quick service restaurant chain (QSR) that is 100% ESOP. The benefits afforded to our employees through this ESOP system has resulted in lower turnover and increased loyalty to the company and its goals.

7. Do you have gift certificates available? In what denominations?
Yes. Gift certificates are available in $5 increments and come pre-packaged in our trademark lemonade cup. Gift certificates are available at ALL our locations.

8. Can I only purchase your lemonade at a Hot Dog on a Stick™ store?
Our popular fresh-squeezed Muscle Beach Lemonade is now available in gallon containers at Hot Dog on a Stick™ locations.

19. Are the Hot Dog on a StickTM and Hot Dogs in a Bun hot dogs made of beef or poultry?
Hot Dog on a StickTM hot dogs are 100% turkey and our Hot Dogs in a Bun are 100% beef.

10. How old do you have to be to work at Hot Dog on a Stick™?
Currently, we are only hiring employees ages 16 years and older.
